T568A Cable Color Map (alternate wiring)¶
Stop — most cables are NOT T568A. Confirm before using this page.
The main Data Cables & Pinout page uses T568B, which is how roughly 90% of patch cables are wired. This page is only for the ~10% wired T568A, where the orange and green pairs are swapped.
Reading these colors off a T568B cable will put 12 V on the wrong pin and can destroy the regulator. For example, solid orange is the 5 V output on T568B but the IGNITION input on T568A — cross them and your ignition 12 V back-feeds the 5 V rail.
Check your cable first — look into the clear RJ45 plug, contacts toward you, cable up:
- Pin 1 orange/white → T568B. Close this page and use the main pinout.
- Pin 1 green/white → T568A. This page applies.
If your cable is confirmed T568A, the orange and green pairs are swapped relative to the main diagram. Everything else — pin numbers, signals, and the blue and brown pairs — is identical. Only the four pin positions below change color.
| Pin position (each jack) | T568B (main diagram) | T568A (this page) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | orange/white | green/white |
| 2 | orange | green |
| 3 | green/white | orange/white |
| 6 | green | orange |
| 4, 5, 7, 8 | blue · blue/white · brown/white · brown | same |
